We know there’s a lot of information out there about the different kinds of life insurance and how they work – some good, some bad, and some ugly. Universal life insurance has been widely criticized by many industry ‘gurus’ for several reasons. Here are just a few:

Now, let’s go through why these opinions persist – and what’s really behind them.

Universal Life is too complicated
We know life insurance can be confusing. That’s why Everly is committed to easy-to-understand language to help people understand how life insurance works, and why we make it a point to include objective educational materials on our website (like this article). Admittedly, term insurance is a bit more easily understood than permanent insurance because it is the most basic type of policy. People buy a term policy to help protect their family in the event of an early death, and that policy lasts for a defined time (a ‘term’) usually 10, 20, or 30 years. If they die during that term period, their beneficiary receives a death benefit. If they live, then the insurance policy ends at the end of the term and beneficiaries do not receive a death benefit. During the term period, the premiums stay the same, no cash value builds, and there aren’t options to increase or decrease coverage.

Permanent coverage is slightly more complex, and permanent coverage can last as long as you want (assuming the premiums are paid). There are two main kinds of permanent coverage – whole life and universal life. As with term insurance, the premiums for whole life are fixed, meaning they cannot change. The whole life death benefit is also guaranteed provided premiums are paid, and whole life policies build cash value with dividends and interest. However, the premiums are usually more expensive than universal life because of the guarantees associated with whole life. 

Universal life is the most flexible kind of permanent insurance, and is designed to give you control as your life evolves. Premiums are usually more expensive than term, but less expensive than whole life. Universal life also grows cash value, and the owner can adjust her premium and death benefit. Universal life insurance is the most ‘hands-on’ policy because the owner has the most control. A prudent owner should be aware of how her policy works, and make adjustments to optimize her policy as life changes. This proactive approach is what makes many people think of universal life as complicated.   

Universal Life has premiums that go up every year
Indeed, universal life premiums usually aren’t fixed. And, the cost of insurance (COI) increases with age – which could result in higher monthly payments. 

The COI is the cost of providing the death benefit to the beneficiary. The COI is usually the minimum premium needed to keep the policy in effect, and it could go up over time because it’s mainly based on how old the insured person is. For example, the COI for a 25-year-old would be less than the COI for a 55-year-old, because the older person is statistically more likely to die than the younger person. 

Because universal life is so flexible, and because Everly makes it easy to make changes to your policy – the choice is yours. You can increase premiums as needed to make sure your policy stays active. Or, you can pay enough premium on the front end of your policy to ensure the policy stays in effect throughout your lifetime. The cash value in universal life goes away
One of the features of universal life is its ability to grow cash value. As we just discussed, the cost of maintaining a universal life policy can increase with age. At Everly, our policyowners have two options for using their cash value: they can access it via loans or withdrawals, or they can use it to help cover the cost of insurance in later years.

If a policyowner doesn’t increase his premiums to make up for the cost of COI as he ages, then his cash value will automatically be used to fund his COI to help prevent his policy from lapsing. That’s why many people choose to build the cash value within their policy by paying maximum premiums for the first several years – then using those funds as needed to help lower the premium costs later on, as COI goes up.

Of course, if a policyowner has already accessed his cash value via loans or withdrawals, and doesn’t have enough money in his account to cover the COI, his policy may lapse. Again, understanding how universal life works is critical in making sure your policy works for you. A universal life policy can protect your family and build cash value – which can be used to help cover COI or can be accessed via policy loans or withdrawals. (It’s important to understand that a policyowner can only borrow from the accumulated cash value, not against the death benefit.)

Pay Your Life Insurance Premiums Using Cash Value


If you’re experiencing financial hardship but don’t want to sacrifice your life insurance by missing payments or lapsing your life insurance policy coverage, you may be able to use the cash value of your policy to pay your monthly insurance premiums.

In dire situations, policyholders can sometimes cancel or ‘surrender’ their life insurance policies. Make a Cash Withdrawal from Your Life Insurance Policy


Policyholders may be able to make a tax-free withdrawal from their life insurance policy as long as the withdrawal amount does not exceed the amount they’ve paid into the cash-value portion of the insurance policy.
